<p>Ich wollte diesen Text schon seit Anfang des Jahres schreiben, aber ich hatte keine Energie dafür. Und hätte ich es probiert, dann hätte ich nicht die richtigen Worte gefunden. Jetzt fühlt sich richtig an. Hier kommt also mein Geständnis oder eher eine Examination. Denn ich gehöre zu dem Personenkreis, der von dem <a href="https://radikal.jetzt/white-passing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">sozialen Phänomen</a> ‚White Passing‘ betroffen ist. Oder davon profitiert. Das weiß ich, weil ich früher immer dachte: „<em>Ich fühle mich so weiß wie meine weißen Freund:innen“. </em> Hätte das jemand in Frage gestellt, ich hätte es genauso unterschrieben.</p>
|
||
<p>Heute sehe ich das anders. Denn was ich damit eigentlich meinte, war der Wunsch, genauso zu sein wie meine weißen Freund:innen. Glatte Haare mit Mittelscheitel zu tragen und mir problemlos einen Pferdeschwanz zu machen. In der Menge verschwinden zu können und nicht immer so aufzufallen. In einer weißen Mehrheitsgesellschaft. Denn da, wo ich aufgewachsen bin, war ich meistens die eine unter den anderen. Oder die andere zwischen dem Rest. Und dennoch hatte ich selten so richtige Probleme ‚dazuzugehören‘. Denn mein <a href="https://www.amazedmag.de/der-mythos-der-starken-schwarzen-frau/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Schwarzsein</a> war und ist weiß beziehungsweise <em>mixed</em> genug, um zu<em> passen</em>.</p>

<h2>Passing – (m)ein Weg durchs Leben</h2>
|
||
<div class="post-content-format--color-block" style="background-color: #faf1d4;">Der Ausdruck ‚<a href="https://queer-lexikon.net/2017/06/08/passing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Passing‘</a> kommt aus dem Englischen und wird mit vorbei- oder durchgehen übersetzt. Abseits seiner sprachlichen Herkunft hat das Wort im gesellschaftlichen Kontext eine viel größere Bedeutung als ein flüchtiges Passieren. Dort beschreibt es nämlich ein soziologisches Phänomen, bei dem die Identität und Zugehörigkeit einer Person von Außenstehenden nicht als solche erkannt wird. Beispiele dafür sind unter anderem das Geschlecht, die sexuelle Orientierung oder eben die Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Ethnie. Wenn ich also von <em>Passing</em> spreche, dann meine ich ganz konkret<em>White Passing</em>.</div>

<p>Denn als Kind mit einem Schwarzen und weißen Elternteil bin ich zwar auf den ersten Blick als solches zu erkennen, doch wie viele andere <em>mixed</em> Personen bin ich ‚hell‘ genug, um in Situationen ‚<em>white</em> zu <em>passen</em>‚. Da ich im Vergleich zu ‚Black People of Colour‘ (BPOC), für viele weiße Menschen, visuell näher am europäischen Ideal zu verorten bin. Doch das passiert nicht nur mir. Viele ‚People of Colour‘ (POC), die nicht äußerlich auffallen, kämpfen mit der ambivalenten Eigenschaft des ‚Passings‘. Denn für die eigene Verortung des Selbstbildes ist es sowohl problematisch, nicht erkannt zu werden, als nur für eine Facette gesehen zu werden. Beides erschwert die Suche nach Identität und Zugehörigkeit, innerhalb Communitys aber auch im sozialen Miteinander.</p>

<h2>White Passing ist ein fragiles Konstrukt ohne Sicherheiten</h2>

<p>Wie wichtig Safe Spaces sind, mit Menschen, in denen man sich wieder erkennt, habe ich in meiner ersten Kolumne über <a href="https://www.amazedmag.de/identitaets-fomo-safe-space/">Identitäts-FOMO</a> geschrieben. Ich habe auch darübergeschrieben, dass ich solche sicheren Räume vermisse, weil ich immer irgendwie dieses Gefühl hatte, dass mir ein Stück meiner Identität fehlt: das Schwarzsein. Da war immer diese Sehnsucht, sich irgendwo zugehörig zu fühlen. Und obwohl ich mich in meinen Umfeldern meist spielerisch zurechtgefunden und eingefügt habe, war das immer dieses Gefühl. Ein Teil zu sein, aber trotzdem außen vor. Schwer zu erklären, einfach nachzufühlen für alle, die sich auch immer in dem Platz dazwischen bewegt haben. Das, was ich früher also nie so richtig erklären konnte, hat für mich mittlerweile einen Namen – <em>White Passing</em>. Es ist das, was uns vermeintlich angleicht, aber auch unterscheidet. Das hat es schon immer.</p>

<p><strong><em>„Da wo du herkommst, bin ich zu weiß für den Afroshop /Aber zu schwarz für den Country Club / Da wo du herkommst, bin ich perfekt für den Fußballplatz / Aber zu schlecht für die Nachbarschaft“</em></strong>, singt SAM und ich fühle, was er meint. Es ist ein Privilegien-Check, dem man sich nicht entziehen kann – der aber auch Grenzen hat. Es ist ein fragiles Konstrukt, das innerhalb der Community Barrieren baut und in einem Moment funktioniert, nur um im nächsten wieder non-existent zu sein. Denn <em>White Passing</em> ist situativ und erlaubt es einem, sich vermeintlich sicherer in mehrheitlich weißen Räumen zu bewegen. Dazuzugehören – doch es kommt mit einem Preis. Der <em>mixed</em> oder <em>light-skinned</em> sein zu einer bittersüßen Erfahrung macht. Eigentlich schon immer, denn auch schon zu Zeiten der Segregation war klar: Je heller die Haut, desto höher das Privileg.</p>

<h2>Mich anzupassen ist ein Teil von mir</h2>
|
||
<p><em>White Passing</em> ist, sich selbst ein Stück aufzugeben – für eine größere Sache. Dafür, einfacher durchs Leben gehen zu können. Dieser banale Satz ist für viele Menschen nämlich nicht selbstverständlich. Sie werden allein durch ihre Präsenz, Sprache, das Äußere oder ihren Namen als anders wahrgenommen. <em>White Passing</em> ist, sich immer irgendwo dazwischen zu fühlen, weil man nicht eindeutig seinen Platz findet. So, als wäre man das letzte Puzzleteil – aber es passt nicht. Nirgends. Und immer sind da Sätze wie: <em>„Du bist doch eine von uns“. „Du bist nicht so wie die anderen“. „Du bist kultiviert, sprichst unsere Sprache, bist europäisch genug und kennst die ungeschriebenen Regeln“. „Du bist nicht so empfindlich“. „Das verstehst du doch.“ „Ich mein das ja nicht so, du weißt das.“</em></p>
|

<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><span class="post-content-format--font-size-1"><em>Als wäre ein Teil von mir unsichtbar oder so irrelevant, dass er übersehen wird. Von meinem Umfeld – aber auch von mir.</em></span></strong></p>

||
<p>Und während also in deiner Anwesenheit problematische Aussagen getroffen werden, merkt niemand, dass du eigentlich keine von ihnen bist. Sondern eine von den anderen. Doch das Weiß-lesen, nicht-weißer Menschen führt dazu, dass sie für das, was sie sind, übersehen werden. Fast als wäre ein Teil der eigenen Identität unsichtbar. Wie genau das aussieht und wie stark „Passing“ auch vor allem in der afroamerikanischen Kultur verankert ist, zeigt auch die Literatur, die ein eigenes Genre für Perspektiven dieser Lebensrealität hat: die ‚Passing Novells‘. Die Betroffenen eine Stimme gibt. Auf Netflix gibt es sogar einen <a href="https://www.wmn.de/lifestyle/entertainment/passing-auf-netflix-rassismus-film-drama-id314750" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">passenden Film</a> dazu, der eindrucksvoll zeigt, wie genau <em>White Passing</em> das Leben beeinflussen kann und was es mit einem macht.</p>

<h2>Nur ein Wort oder die Macht von Code-Switching</h2>
|
||
<p>Ich bin mir meinem Nicht-Weiß-Sein lange nicht mehr so bewusst geworden wie in den letzten Monaten. Denn mit der Veränderung meines Umfeldes fällt mir immer öfter meine eigene Außenwirkung auf. Da sind komische Blicke. Das Gefühl, manchmal auf Eierschalen zu laufen und sich dadurch irgendwie anders im öffentlichen Raum zu bewegen. Plötzlich bin ich mir meiner Präsenz sehr gewahr. Fast so, als müsste ich mich auf der Hut befinden, vor irgendwas. Dabei ist dort keine Gefahr, nur das zerbrechliche Korsett des sozialen Raums. Indem ich <em>White Passe</em> und dadurch manchmal das Gefühl habe, nur zu Gast zu sein. Als könnte es jeden Moment auffallen, dass ich mich eingeschlichen habe. Und was es dafür braucht, ist ein falsches Wort, eine falsche Mimik, Gestik oder Handlung. Also erwische ich mich dabei, wie ich mein Verhalten anpasse und <em>Code-Switche</em>. Fast automatisch und mechanisch.</p>

<div class="post-content-format--color-block" style="background-color: #faf1d4;">„<a href="https://hbr.org/2019/11/the-costs-of-codeswitching" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Code-Switching</a>“ bezeichnet das Anpassen des Sprachstils, des Verhaltens, des Aussehens und des Auftretens, mit dem Zweck, das sich andere wohlfühlen. Im Gegenzug wird sich davon eine faire Behandlung im Bezug auf Dienstleistungen (Job-)Möglichkeiten und anderes versprochen, die man ohne adaptieren dieser ‚Codes‘ nicht erhalten würde. Die Praktik kommt immer dann zum Einsatz, um negative Stereotpyen, Vorurteile oder -ismen zu umgehen, um so Zugriff auf Privilegien oder Eintritt in bestimmte Räume zu bekommen, die einem sonst aus kulturellen und strukturellen Gründen verwehrt wären.</div>
|
||
<h2>White Passing, ein ambivalentes Privileg</h2>
|
||
<p>Denn genau das ist die eigentliche Fähigkeit, die einem das „Passing“ verleiht. Man legt sich einen Schutzmantel um, von dem man weiß, dass er dem Umfeld den meisten Komfort bietet. Und das auf Kosten des eigenen Wohlbefindens. Ob der Mantel nicht sitzt oder drückt, interessiert die anderen nicht, solange sie sich in ihrem eigenen Dasein nicht gestört fühlen. Man passt sich, dass verhalten und Aussehen den Situationen, die man navigiert, entsprechend an. Mit dem Ziel, gleich behandelt zu werden. Doch das führt eben auch dazu, dass man einen Teil von sich selbst zurücksteckt und im Extremfall verleugnet. Hier also wieder das zweischneidige Schwert. Vor allem, wenn man sich irgendwo dazwischen befindet. Sich wie ein Chamäleon von Situation zu Situation hangelt.</p>

<p>Und das ist oft ermüdend. Obwohl ich das ungewollte Privileg besitze, von diesem Mechanismus zu profitieren, ist es nichts, auf das man stolz sein kann. Manchmal ist es sogar ziemlich beschämend, zu wissen, nur deshalb in bestimmten Situationen zu sein. Weil man ‚passiert‘, ohne Aufsehen zu erregen. Weil man in dem Rahmen von akzeptabel existiert, der vor zig Jahren gesellschaftlich festgelegt wurde. Weil man Teil eines Phänomens ist, was eigentlich längst irrelevant sein sollte – doch das ist nicht die Realität. Denn die hält immer noch unsichtbare Barrieren für POC und andere bereit, die man nicht erkennen, sondern nur fühlen kann. Und manchmal tut das weh. Manchmal lässt es einen zweifeln.</p>

<h2>Das Gefühl ohne Namen hat jetzt zwei Wörter</h2>

||
<p>Immer dann versuche ich mich daran zu erinnern, dass es am Ende darauf ankommt, was man daraus macht. Dass meine Anwesenheit in diesem Moment an diesen Orten wichtig dafür ist, was in Zukunft passieren kann. Hoffentlich passieren wird. Dass sich andere an mich und meine Präsenz gewöhnen und die Fragilität von „Passing“ oder jemanden als etwas zu lesen, was er nicht ist, verloren geht. Denn niemand möchte als etwas anderes durchgehen, wenn es eine klar (an-) zu erkennende Identität gibt. Die sowohl von einem selbst als auch vom außen gesehen werden sollte. Und ja, rückblickend war es ganz schön naiv von mir, mit dem Gedanken durch die Welt zu gehen, ich wäre so weiß wie meine Freund:innen.</p>
|
||
<p>Aber zu der Zeit war genau das die Beschreibung, die diesem komischen Gefühl am nächsten kam. Einem Gefühl, dem ich mittlerweile einen Namen geben kann: <em>White Passing</em>. Und das ist irgendwie beruhigend. In der Psychologie gibt es nämlich diese Idee von <em>’name it to tame it‘</em>. Und indem ich es benenne und zuordne, nehme ich dem White Passing ein bisschen von der Macht, die es über mich hat. Denn ich weiß, ich bin nicht allein in dieser Realität. Die (er)leben nämlich auch andere. Was gleichermaßen furchtbar wie beruhigend ist. Sich aber ein klein wenig verstandener und weniger einsam anfühlt. <strong><em>I see you and you see me.</em></strong></p>
